GEocoding
Geocoding is the process by which your data is shown on the map as point locations. The process is similar to 'Creating points', however geocoding allows you to read geographic information from your dataset. When it finds the corresponding location on a map a point is placed there to represent your data.
Geocoding is often used to visualise data that is currently held in a database, as it matches the location information, usually addresses, held in the data record with the relevant point on the map by allocating X and Y coordinates on the map to the data held in the table.
Addresses are the most common form of data available and MapInfo allows you to create points associated with address records that you hold. However, its worth noting that it is unusual to get a 100% success rate when matching a database of addresses against a geocoded street file, as for this to happen both much be 100% properly coded.
The key to obtaining as good a match as possible is to ensure that the data has been recorded in a consistent fashion both within each dataset and between them. By way of an example, US addresses can often cause confusion as 200 South Wacrker Drive could equally correctly be recorded as 200 S Wacker Drive.
