A wildcard is a character that you use when you aren't sure of that individual letter or the remainder of the word. For example you might want to find all place names beginning with Der. In that case you would search for Der% and this would find all place names beginning with Der, no matter how long they are. The wildcard character in this case is "%".
MapInfo also has an individual wildcard character. You might also want to search for a place name but not be sure on an individual character, for example, is somewhere called Derby or Darby. In that case you would search for D_rby. The individual wildcard character is a "_".
